β our mission β
to build a healthier community by providing access to nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste.
our impact
In Harris County, more than 20% of people face food insecurity, yet 40% of the available food supply gets thrown away.
Since we began operations in 2015, we have rescued over 12 million pounds of food, valued at more than $82 million, from over 400 food donors and delivered it to over 140 local nonprofits.
As one of the fastest-growing nonprofits in Houston, Second Servings delivers food that helps nourish over 200,000 Houstonians in need each year.
what is food rescue?
Food rescue, also known as food recovery, is the practice of retrieving unserved and unsold food that would otherwise go to waste and distributing it to those in need. The food we recover is perfectly edible, but was either surplus from a banquet or event, or unsold due to package dates, excess inventory, mislabeled, cosmetically challenged, etc.
